Striking the perfect balance between enough seating and too much seating is tricky. It’s almost as tricky as finding cute folding chairs.

In an alternate universe, I have a spacious wallpapered dining room with an oversized table and at least 10 sturdy, stylish side chairs. The chairs probably have custom velvet upholstery, since in this very fancy other world my kids don’t squeeze their applesauce pouches into their laps and my husband eats ribs without leaving a trail of barbecue sauce in his wake.

For better or worse, I live in the real world, where I have a small dining room in the middle of a 106-year-old bungalow. It’s not wallpapered, but it is the only way to get from the living room to the kitchen and it feels crowded enough with a modest table, three metal dining chairs, and a high chair. Keeping any additional seating in there just isn’t an option on a day-to-day basis.

Enter folding chairs. They make so much sense for those of us who don’t have expansive formal dining rooms but who also like to throw the occasional dinner party or invite friends over for game night. Folding chairs can be tucked into a closet or under a bed when you don’t need them and then magically appear when you do. Unfortunately most of the readily available folding chairs look like something you’d find at a sales conference or wedding reception, and I don’t want either of those in my home.
